Hello, and welcome to the summer newsletter.

This quarter should be a lot of fun. As usual, our picnic will be the first Saturday in August with Karaoke by Josie. We will be staying open with our regular Karaoke by Suzi-Q in the evening from 8 pm -12 midnight.

Because of the picnic, our steak dinner for August will be on the 3rd Saturday. In July and September the steak dinner will be on the 1st Saturday. We will be having a chicken and ribs dinner on the third Saturday in July – hosted by the Ladies Auxiliary.

Many of you are familiar with our mascot, “AL.” He has been busy and now has a wife, “ALAna” and a son “SALvadore.” We suspect they adopted their son as it does not look like either AL or his wife. He is, however, publishing his own article for the paper and you should go read it on page 6.

We are in the summer months – where business always slows. We appreciate each of you coming in and spending a little time with us. Although there are a lot of summer activities, please come down and stay a while with your friends. AL and I hope to see you there!

– Paul Turner

The woman’s auxiliary started off last quarter with our annual Easter Egg Hunt at War Memorial park. We received many contributions from our local business’s to fill the eggs, and a lot of support from the post. The Martinsburg Journal showed up and covered the event, showing how everyone from age 1 to 100 enjoyed the day. Lisa Turner, treasurer, had her yearly audit by the state, and we are pleased to announce the books are perfect. Way to go Lisa!!! Starting in April the auxiliary held nominations followed by elections for the upcoming year. The ladies are showing up everywhere. We are always there to help with the pancake breakfast, steak dinner, and any other event the post might have for us. On June 21st Dianne Orlick, president, attended the National 9/11 Flag Stitching Ceremony at the Martinsburg VAMC to show the support of the auxiliary. “It was a once in a lifetime experience,” Dianne said. To continue to support our Veterans, the auxiliary is providing lunch for the ribbon cutting ceremony of the new HOPE Center at the Martinsburg VAMC in July. If you would like to help please see Dianne or Sarah.

In Upcoming news we will be having our 2nd annual BBQ Rib and Chicken Dinner in August. Check the board for the event date.

Have a safe summer

I would like to thank all the members who paid their dues for 2011. If you did not pay your dues for 2011 by now you are considered diligent by National. When they put together the 2012 roster you will be put in without continuous years. If you miss paying just one year you are not considered a continuous member. I encourage all members to pay your dues early and keep your years up to date. In addition to having continuous years, you are also invited to attend the free Early Bird Dinner. Remember, your 2012 dues must be paid by October 1 to be Early Bird Dinner eligible. Also, I encourage all members to try to sign up new members and help make our Post grow. There has been an American Legion Post 14 in Berkeley County since the American Legion was formed in 1919. Help keep Post 14 going and growing.

If you know anybody who did not pay their dues for 2011, encourage them to renew their membership. If you know someone who served in the military or is still serving, please invite them to join our Post. The American Legion needs all the members it can get to have a successful post. There are a lot of things going on at your post and for the community. Don’t forget to check the calendar of events for what is happening. If you have any questions about how you can help with an event at the Post or in our community, please leave a message with a bartender or contact our Commander, Bob Speaks.

To continue getting the newsletter you need your dues paid up to date. We are trying to save money on newsletter costs by sending the newsletter by e-mail. If you have an e-mail address and are not receiving your newsletter via that e-mail address, please keep us upto-date by getting notifying Paul Turner.

Saving money here will give us more money to use for our new building and other programs that we do each year. Please check out the programs and see if you can get involved in one of them.

We could use all your help so let us know what interest you have. We are always looking for new ideas and projects to help the community.

We are running Bingo on Wednesday nights in our Legion Hall. If anybody has any experience in working bingo or calling bingo, we could use all the help you can provide. We are doing very well with Bingo and invite everybody to come out and play. Players don’t have to be a Post member to play Bingo so invite all your friends to come join you.

Please read the Calendar of events and put in your input if you know of something we have missed. Come on out and help with the Post events. Thanks to those who have served or are still serving. A big thanks to all that have gotten involved with the Post, keep up the good job and get more members involved with us.

– Chuck Stanley

A nickel, a dime, a dollar or two,

What does it mean to someone like you?

A snack or a treat or a candy bar,

Its everyday life as we cruise in our car.

Air conditioning and heat and all the conveniences of life,

A fly or mosquito are our life’s only strife.

Houses, toys and gadgets of all kind,

We heap to ourselves until we are blind.

Blind to the lost and hurting out there,

With no one to help and no one to care.

We sit in our churches so snug and refined,

While the world goes to hell and we remain blind.

Christmas, Easter and Halloween, too,

We spend all our money but still remain blue.

Can we not see the price that He paid,

Was for others who in life’s ditches have laid.

Can we pass by on the other side,

And turn a deaf ear to those who have cried.

Will we remain complacent?— you see;

I have decided it’s not just about me.

But if I would look as Jesus has said,

I would give money and I would give bread.

I would arise and look on their plight,

I would fund missions and take my flight.

To carry the true gospel to others you see

Because I have come to realize it’s not just about me.
